Seven specific spec failures — each paired with the store-floor consequence it produces and the one-line fix for the next RFQ. Wells sized to the box instead of the product, no loaded weight, a finish adjective instead of a grade, and the restock action nobody designed.
A fabrication drawing needs exactly two kinds of tolerance information: a general note referencing the published per-process standard, and explicit callouts on the few features where fit actually matters. Everything else is over-specification — and over-specification is a cost you didn’t choose.
Acceptance disputes come from unmeasurable quality language — \”flawless\” cannot be inspected. How Inspection Distance and per-process tolerance bands replace adjectives with criteria both sides can measure, grade surfaces individually, and make receiving a checklist instead of a negotiation.
“Snug” is not a spec. Fit is a clearance band between your product’s real dimensional range and the well’s toleranced dimensions — two stacked variations, both measurable. How to measure the product like a fabricator, choose a fit class by outcome, and lock it on the prototype.
Standoffs carry most refined sign installs — and most install failures. The anatomy of the system, why the panel must float on its hardware, the layout logic that prevents cracked corners, and the machined hole precision that makes a multi-panel wall line up.
A four-show-a-year exhibit is assembled and disassembled dozens of times by different hands — connection cycles, not show days, are its real duty spec. Connection hierarchy, designed wear parts, and the tolerance thinking that lets parts mate at 7 a.m. under pressure.
The architect’s drawings state intent; the fabricator’s shop drawings state construction — the submittal loop exists because those are different documents with different authors. Where early fabricator input saves the design, and the revision discipline both sides need.
Acrylic enters buildings as fabricated elements — partitions, panels, railing infill, diffusers, formed features — and it deserves a spec section as rigorous as glazing. The architect’s and designer’s guide to the element families, the submittal workflow, and the site-dimension realities.
Inside corners want radii, cutting tools consume material, and the cleanest drawings specify intent rather than toolpath. What kerf and tool geometry mean for your part, which callouts help a fabricator, and which ones quietly fight the process.
Repeatability is engineered, not promised — tooling, locked documentation, and measurable acceptance criteria are what make the 50th part match the first. The procurement-side guide to how recurring acrylic production actually works, from qualification to change control.
